Earthday Reconsidered

I'm thinking of a Planet that somehow went astray,
the selfish beings on it cared only for TODAY.
With no grasp of the future, no dream to pull them through -
their world began to crumble, no longer fresh and new.
Polluted were her waters, great forests laid to waste
fresh air had all but vanished, yet faster still they raced.

The women became heartless, turning mean and cold;
they killed their helpless unborn and hated growing old.
Men chased after idols; rock-stars, sports and speed
nothing could distract them from worshiping those "needs".
Others spread diseases, polluting human kind;
transmitting death through lifestyle, as though they didn't mind.

Children grew up quickly and lost their wondrous sight;
caught-up in high-tech fever, transfixed in TV's light.
Parents could have warned them, but had no time to tell
their little ones of power - of TV's glowing spell.

Programs became central; Idol, Nintendo, Word*,
people in the background were seldom seen or heard.
Daily tunnel-vision captured countless minds;
"Big-Brother" in a black box had rendered millions blind.

Now, a new bandwagon to follow "just say no"
fueled with new emotion a brand-new media show.
"We have to clean the Earth up" was heard throughout the land,
"recycle and stop wasting - let's give the Earth a hand."
Little did they notice the landfill in their mind;
'inquiring' trash compactors, no gossip left behind.

Bitterness and Anger - Envy, Fear and Greed;
These, the true pollutants they simply would not heed.

Second Earth Age

Long before the Earth was new, when time had just begun,
Creation sang in harmony its' praises to the Son.
He made life where there was none - a miracle to see;
changing darkest emptiness to countless galaxies!

Some called it "Big-Bang theory" or "Accidental Spark",
not knowing why He made us, they always miss the mark.
Pretending expert knowledge, they told us reasons why
we could not have a purpose - "just live, and finally die."

Our schools took up this doctrine, no faith or hope could be
expressed within those buildings - no view of eternity.
Cut loose from His foundation, the country was at war;
with money, drugs and music we fought the man next door.
We filled our minds in motion, we bought and sold our dreams
and in our foolish 'wisdom' did what was best, it seems.

"Our appetites will guide us" became our hymn of praise,
those with moral standards were simply out of phase.
We branded them as 'Censors', our books and art became
a tower of defiance - devoid of any shame.

Like the tower of Babel that rose to such great height,
proud lifestyles cried for judgment as we stumbled in the night.
At last, our lofty wasted lives forced everyone to see
how pointless blind pursuit is - this focusing on ME.

Our Maker has an answer, if only we would hear
His message of self-giving; His hope that We draw near.
Why don't we just admit it - we failed at every turn,
no matter what decisions came we found it hard to learn;
That giving really matters far more than taking in -
clinging to the short-term gain is slavery to sin!

Not far from now, when Earth's renewed
Creation once again
will sing in perfect harmony
His praises without end!

Reconsidered" and "Reflections of Life" (!!!!)
I found them most intuitive, well crafted and just plain
enjoyable !, and I'd like to share it with some of my
'Elderly' friends. Those of us who have 'passed' into
the "Golden Years" rarely read anything that really
means something ! ~ sincerely, Virginia R. Berndt
